About Darryl
Darryl Michael Speach is a global business executive who has spent more than three decades helping organizations improve performance, customer experience, leadership, and workforce capability. His career spans healthcare, entertainment, financial services, hospitality, and large-scale destination experiences — sectors that rarely resemble one another, except in how much they depend on people adapting well to change.
Over the course of his career, he has held leadership roles with The Walt Disney Company, New York Life Insurance Company, Creative Artists Agency, Majid Al Futtaim, Centene, and, most recently, Qiddiya/SEVEN in Saudi Arabia — six organizations, four industries, multiple continents, each one adding to a body of work few executives ever see from more than a single vantage point.
Across every industry he has served, one pattern has repeated itself: organizations rarely struggle because change arrives. They struggle because they recognize its significance too late. That observation became the foundation for The Phantom Workforce.
Speach is the founder of the AI Experience Institute™, where leaders learn to build human-centered organizations in the age of artificial intelligence. His view of the subject comes not from the software industry, but from three decades spent inside the industries AI is now reshaping — the vantage point of a business leader, not a technologist.
His work is guided by a simple belief: the future will not belong to the organizations with the best artificial intelligence. It will belong to the organizations that bring out the best in human intelligence.
Author of The Phantom Workforce
The Phantom Workforce examines what happens when artificial intelligence creates new organizational capacity without adding people — and what leaders must do when competitors begin moving faster, producing more, and operating at lower cost. The book is written for leaders who need a practical way to understand the competitive force behind AI adoption while protecting the human judgment, trust, capability, and leadership that technology cannot replace.
Founder, AI Experience Institute™
The AI Experience Institute™ helps leaders build the human side of AI — the skills, systems, and leadership behaviors that turn technology into sustained organizational capability. The work is grounded in a simple idea: AI adoption is not only a technology challenge. It is a behavior, capability, culture, and leadership challenge.
“The future will not belong to the organizations with the best artificial intelligence. It will belong to the organizations that bring out the best in human intelligence.”
Founder Story
That variety is the point. In every one of those industries, Darryl’s job was the same: help human beings get better at what they do, fast enough to matter. The setting changed — a theme park, an insurance office, a talent agency, a healthcare organization — but the underlying work of building human capability at scale, across very different cultures, is what he has spent his career learning to do well.
Cross-Industry Experience
Darryl has held senior learning and experience leadership roles across six organizations and four industries. He began his career as a Master Facilitator with The Walt Disney Company’s Disney University and Disney Institute. He went on to serve as Vice President of Learning & Development at New York Life Insurance Company; Global Head of Learning & Development at Creative Artists Agency; Chief Learning Officer at Majid Al Futtaim in Dubai; Dean of Centene University at Fortune 25 Centene; and, most recently, Executive Director, Guest Experience & Learning and Development at Qiddiya/SEVEN in Saudi Arabia.
Six organizations, four industries, multiple continents — each one adding a vantage point few executives ever see from more than one seat, and a front-row view of transformation after transformation: the personal computer, the spreadsheet, the internet, and now artificial intelligence. He has watched the same pattern repeat enough times to stop being surprised by the plot, even as each wave arrives faster than the one before it.
The Craft Behind the Work
Darryl’s perspective is only half of what he brings to the AI Experience Institute™. The other half is craft. He learned to teach as a Disney Master Facilitator, and spent the decades since building corporate universities and enterprise learning functions from the ground up — most visibly as Dean of Centene University. That Disney master facilitation and Disney curriculum design discipline is what turns the ideas in The Phantom Workforce into a room where senior leaders actually think, speak honestly, and decide. It is the reason the Institute’s workshops are experiences leaders work through, not presentations they sit through.
The Pattern He Observed
The companies caught flat-footed by a wave of change are rarely the ones who never saw it coming. More often, they saw it clearly and still couldn’t move — because moving meant disrupting a comfortable, profitable, familiar way of doing business. That observation, made across decades and industries, became the foundation for The Phantom Workforce.
Why His Perspective Is Different
Darryl is direct about what he is not. He is not a technologist. He has never written a line of code, and he does not claim to explain how artificial intelligence works at the level of mathematics.
What he offers instead is three decades spent reading the human and competitive forces inside organizations, and telling leaders the truth about where those forces are heading. His view comes from having led inside the industries AI is now reshaping, not from having built the software doing the reshaping — a necessary complement to the technologist’s view, not a replacement for it. Organizations need people who understand the model. They also need people who understand the humans who will work alongside it.
From Author to Founder
Writing The Phantom Workforce was never meant to be the end of the work. The book was built short on purpose — not to make readers AI experts, but to give them a way of seeing clearly enough to act on. Once a reader closes it, a practical question remains: what do you actually do Monday?
The AI Experience Institute™ exists to answer that question — founded to help individuals and organizations move from recognizing the changes described in the book to leading effectively through them.
The Human-Centered AI Leadership System and Its Five Ps
Leaders kept asking Darryl the same question, near the end of nearly every conversation about AI: “Okay. Where do I start?” His answer is not a list of tools to buy, because tools expire. It is a way to think, durable enough to outlast whichever model or vendor is dominant this quarter. He calls it the Human-Centered AI Leadership System — five questions, not five technologies, that a leader can run any AI decision through, fast, and trust.
The five are, in order: Pressure, Purpose, People, Practice, and Proof.
1 of 5
Pressure — Where is competition forcing change?
Not where AI is interesting, but where the competitive ground is genuinely moving. Pressure is not panic, and it isn’t mistaking quiet for safety; it’s an honest reading of where a competitor is most likely to open a gap, so leaders aim their attention there first.
2 of 5
Purpose — Are we using AI to shrink people, or to amplify people?
Left undecided, adoption defaults to cost-cutting, because subtraction is the path of least resistance. Purpose is the deliberate choice to point the technology at growth instead — doing dramatically more with the people already on the team.
3 of 5
People — What human value must we protect?
Not which tasks — which value. Machines will keep taking tasks; that’s what every technological wave does. The discipline is identifying the judgment, trust, taste, and care inside a role, and making sure that value survives the redesign, with more room to grow, not less.
4 of 5
Practice — How will people build fluency through real work?
Capability is not communication. No one becomes fluent with AI from a webinar; fluency is built by using the tool on real work, repeatedly, until the new way feels normal. This is where most transformations quietly die, and where a deliberate system — not a one-time event — makes the difference.
5 of 5
Proof — What will we measure beyond cost savings?
The wrong metrics create the wrong behaviors. An organization that measures only what it saved will get exactly that, and little else. Proof means measuring capability, trust, and growth alongside cost — because what gets measured is what gets built.
The five work as a sequence, not a checklist to admire. Pressure tells a leader whether to move. Purpose tells them which direction. People tells them what must survive. Practice tells them how the organization becomes able to do it. Proof tells them whether the first four answers are holding up in reality, or only on a slide. Run a real decision through all five, in order, and a choice that looked obvious on a spreadsheet often reveals itself as something else entirely.
This system is the foundation for everything the Institute teaches — how we help leaders bring out the best in human intelligence, not by mastering a technology that will be replaced within the year, but by carrying five durable questions that were never really about the technology at all.
His Guiding Belief
“The future will not be built by organizations with the best artificial intelligence. It will be built by organizations that bring out the best in human intelligence.”
That belief runs through Darryl’s entire career, long before artificial intelligence made it urgent — through corporate universities built from nothing and workforces trained to turn service into a feeling. The Five Ps are that belief made practical: a system built not to help organizations acquire better artificial intelligence, but to help them bring out the best in the humans who will decide what to do with it.
Closing Invitation
If you are preparing your organization and your people for the age of artificial intelligence, I would like to help. I have spent three decades watching leaders navigate change this disorienting, and I have never once seen the winning organization be the one with simply the best technology. It was always the one that took its people seriously enough to lead them through it, honestly, on purpose.
That is the work of the AI Experience Institute™. I hope you will learn human-centered AI with us.
